On Wednesday, February 25, 2015 Irit Felsen will be at the Yeshivah of Flatbush, Joel Braverman High School located in Brooklyn, NY. The High School is organizing a special program called “Book Day”, a full day symposium for the 11th and 12th grade students.
Presentations and special programming based on themes extrapolated from a selected work of literature are presented to the students. This year, Book Day features the Pulitzer- prizewinning graphic novel Maus by Art Spiegelman.
Irit will be giving an educational session for the students about the inter-generational relationship between survivors and their children, since a major theme in the book is the relationship between Art and his father Vladek.
Irit will also be giving a presentation to the teachers and other distinguished guests. This presentation will highlight the role of literature about the Holocaust, by Holocaust survivors and especially by the second generation. We speak of the “speechlessness of terror”, which renders victims unable to describe their experiences and compromises the capacity of others to listen to them. The important and unique role of this literature is in commemorating and giving voice to some of the ramifications and reverberations of the catastrophe in the private lives of the survivors and their families, in giving voice to the private narrative of the Holocaust, as it was experienced in the atmosphere of the home and the relationships between parents and their children.
